Ex-Australia batter David Warner charged with drink-driving

Former Australia opener David Warner has been charged with drink-driving in Sydney after failing a random breath test on Sunday.

The 39-year-old was arrested and taken to Maroubra Police Station, where a second test confirmed he was over twice the legal blood alcohol concentration limit permitted in New South Wales.

The Incident and What Police Found

New South Wales Police confirmed that a van was seen stopping short of the testing site and parking before officers approached the vehicle. Traffic and Highway Patrol Command officers subjected Warner to a roadside test, which returned a positive result. He was subsequently arrested and transported to Maroubra Police Station, where a second test recorded a blood alcohol concentration reading of 0.104.

Under New South Wales law, this falls under a mid-range prescribed concentration of alcohol, which applies to drivers with a BAC between 0.08 and 0.149. Warner is scheduled to appear in court on May 7 in Sydney.

PSL Commitments Remain Unaffected

At the time of the incident, Warner was on a week-long break from the Pakistan Super League, where he currently serves as captain of the Karachi Kings. He had been granted permission to return to Australia for personal reasons during a gap in the franchise’s schedule.

The Kings last played on April 2, a match in which Warner contributed a half-century during a win over Rawalpindi. Their next fixture is on April 9 against Peshawar Zalmi, which will also mark the team’s first home game in Karachi.

ESPNcricinfo understands that the arrest does not affect Warner’s plans to return to Pakistan as scheduled. He is expected to be available for the upcoming match. The Karachi Kings are currently the only team in the PSL with a perfect record this season, having won all three of their matches so far.

The tournament final is set for May 3 in Lahore, meaning the court appearance on May 7 should not interfere with his availability for the remainder of the competition. The Kings declined to make an official comment when approached.

Reactions and Warner’s Recent Cricket Career

Cricket New South Wales, which runs the Sydney Thunder, responded to the incident with a measured but firm statement. Lee Germon, the NSW CEO, noted that Cricket NSW is a strong advocate of safe driving and takes incidents of this nature seriously. He added that Warner is aware of the seriousness of the allegations and that the organization will support him through the process while working together on further educating him and all players about the importance of safe driving.

It is worth noting that Cricket NSW and Transport for NSW have maintained a 23-year partnership centered on road safety, which includes the annual Road Safety Cup between Thunder and Brisbane Heat. The cup, which began in 2023, is considered one of NSW’s most recognisable road safety platforms.

Warner retired from international cricket in 2024 after making 383 appearances across all formats for Australia between 2009 and 2024. Before his PSL stint, he had a record-breaking season in the Big Bash League, averaging 86.6 for the Sydney Thunder and earning a place as captain of the official team of the tournament. His latest legal trouble, however, has cast a shadow over what has otherwise been a productive chapter in his post-international career.
