Chris Gayle also has assumed new roles in the world of cricket, becoming the co-owner of the Glasgow Mugafians franchise of the European T20 Premier League and the global brand ambassador to the league.
The ETPL made the announcement on social media. This is another giant step towards the development of franchise cricket in Europe.
Chris Gayle Steps Into Ownership With Glasgow Mugafians
Mugafi Group backs the Glasgow Mugafians franchise, which is mainly owned by Tansha Batra. Gayle is now coming on board as co-owner, and with his profile and experience of playing franchise cricket all over the world, he has become the most prominent figure of ETPL.
In his statement, Gayle described the move as an exciting new chapter and said he believes Europe is cricket’s final frontier.
He said, “Stepping into the role of co-owner of Glasgow Mugafians marks an exciting new chapter for me. The ETPL is already creating waves globally, and having played in franchise leagues around the world, I’m confident this will be something special. Europe represents cricket’s final frontier, and the ETPL has the potential to unravel promising local talent and nurture future heroes who will strengthen the sport in that region. I can’t wait to get started on this new journey.”
His role does not stop there. Gayle will also serve as the global brand ambassador for the entire league. This move will give the league a recognizable and widely respected face as it prepares for its first season.
ETPL Inaugural Season Set for August-September 2026
The first-ever season of the European T20 Premier League is scheduled to take place between August 26 and September 20. There are six franchises representing Glasgow, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Dublin, Belfast, and Rotterdam. They will compete across 33 matches. The league is unparalleled as it is the first ICC-approved T20 franchise competition in Europe, and this aspect alone creates a sense of credibility with which other regional cricket programs cannot be identified.
The Mugafi Group and Gayle were also given a warm welcome into the league by Abhishek Bachchan, the co-owner of the ETPL. Bachchan spoke of Europe as a place with a rich sporting culture, diversity, and unexploited potential for cricket. His remarks showed an even larger intention, and that was to establish Europe as the centre of serious global cricket and not a marginal market.
Star-Studded Ownership Group Taking Shape
The ETPL has put together a notable list of cricket and sporting personalities as franchise owners. The Amsterdam franchise is backed by Australian cricket legend Steve Waugh and hockey icon Jamie Dwyer, with Mitchell Marsh named as captain. Glenn Maxwell co-owns the Belfast franchise. Edinburgh is supported by New Zealand internationals Kyle Mills and Nathan McCullum, with Mitchell Santner as their captain.
ich is now co-owned by Gayle and Tansha Batra, fits into a group that brings serious cricket pedigree to each franchise. The league’s ability to attract these names points to growing confidence in European franchise cricket as a commercially and competitively viable space.
For Gayle, this is a career-enhancing business step. With him as its representative, on the ownership front and as its face to the world, in its inaugural season, the ETPL now proudly has one of the most recognizable faces in the world of cricket.
