The Oval will host the ICC World Test Championship Final for the second time, with the England and Wales Cricket Board confirming the venue and dates for the 2027 showpiece. The final will run from Wednesday, 9 June to Sunday, 13 June, marking the second consecutive WTC cycle to conclude at the London venue after Australia beat India there in 2023.
The ICC had already announced last year that England secured hosting rights for the next three World Test Championship finals, covering 2027, 2029 and 2031. The ECB holds responsibility for choosing the venue at each edition, and it has now settled on The Oval for the upcoming cycle.
Race For 2027 WTC Final Heats Up Among Nine Teams
The current World Test Championship cycle is approaching its final stretch, and nine teams remain in contention for a place in the 2027 final. Australia sit at the top of the standings with a points percentage of 87.50, having won seven of their eight Tests so far. South Africa, the defending champions, follow in second place with 75 percent.
New Zealand hold third position with 72.22 percent and remain within reach of South Africa. Bangladesh have pushed into contention as well, climbing to 58.33 percent after completing a 2-0 series sweep against Pakistan in May. India, appearing in their second WTC final chase, sit fifth with 48.15 percent after four wins from nine Tests, just ahead of Sri Lanka at 41.67 percent.
England, West Indies and Pakistan trail well behind the top group, with points percentages of 24.36, 15 and 8.33 respectively. All three sides face a steep climb if they want to secure a spot in the final at The Oval.
Key Series Set To Shape The Standings Over Coming Months
Several important series in July and August will influence where teams stand heading into the business end of the cycle. West Indies open the stretch by hosting Pakistan in a two-Test series starting 25 July, and both teams need the points badly. Australia then host Bangladesh for a two-match series from 13 August, aiming to extend their lead at the top.
Attention shifts to Asia soon after, when Sri Lanka and India meet for a two-Test series beginning 15 August. Pakistan will also travel to England for a three-Test series that runs through August and September, adding further weight to the standings before the cycle moves toward its conclusion.
ICC And ECB Officials React To Final Venue Announcement
ICC General Manager for Events and Operations, Gaurav Saxena, called the WTC final one of the most prestigious fixtures in world cricket. He noted that the 2027 edition carries added significance, arriving as the sport marks 150 years of Test cricket, and pointed to The Oval’s long history of hosting major cricketing moments.
ECB Managing Director for Competitions and Major Events, Neil Snowball, said hosting the next three finals in England and Wales is an honour for the board. He referenced the success of the 2023 final at the same venue and said the board expects the 2027 edition to deliver a similarly memorable occasion for players and fans.
The WTC final has produced three different champions across its three editions so far — New Zealand in 2021, Australia in 2023 and South Africa in 2025 — and the race for a fourth crown at The Oval is now well underway.
