Nepal are set to host two consecutive tri-series in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 between late April and late May, in what shapes up as the most critical stretch of their qualification campaign. The matches will carry enormous weight, as the top four teams at the end of the competition earn automatic spots at the Cricket World Cup 2027 Qualifier.
Rohit Paudel’s side currently sit seventh in the eight-team standings with just 12 points from 20 matches, five wins and 13 losses. With 16 points still available across the upcoming home fixtures, Nepal face a must-win situation on their own turf.
What the Format Looks Like
The first tri-series runs from April 25 to May 5, where Nepal will face Oman, currently third in the standings, and the United Arab Emirates, who sit eighth. The second tri-series follows from May 12 to May 22, with Nepal taking on table-toppers USA and second-placed Scotland. Both opponents in the second leg have been the strongest sides in the competition so far, making those matches significantly harder to navigate.
Over 24 tri-series, each of the eight teams plays 36 one-day internationals in total. The top four teams at the conclusion of the cycle advance to the Cricket World Cup Qualifier, while the bottom four enter the Qualifier Play-off, where they face the top four sides from the Challenge League for the remaining spots.
Nepal’s Current Position and What They Need
Nepal’s recent ODI form has been poor. In their last tri-series outing in November, they lost all four matches, including two against the UAE. However, the side can draw motivation from their previous League 2 cycle, where they won 11 of their last 12 matches to squeeze into the top four. A repeat of that kind of run is exactly what is needed now.
No Nepali player currently features among the top 15 run-scorers or wicket-takers in the competition, which highlights the need for consistent individual contributions alongside collective team effort. Karan KC has been the standout performer in tough situations, most notably rescuing a one-wicket win against Scotland with an unbeaten 65 from 41 balls batting with the tail.
The Broader Standings Picture
USA lead the competition with 36 points from 24 matches, holding an 18-win record and a two-point advantage over Scotland, who have 34 points from 28 matches. Oman are third with 29 points, and the Netherlands hold fourth place on 28 points. Namibia are fifth on 22 points, and Canada sit sixth with 21 points but have four games in hand.
For Nepal to break into the top four, they will likely need results to go their way elsewhere, while also putting together a near-perfect home series. The task is difficult but not impossible, particularly given the precedent they set in the previous cycle.
The upcoming tri-series at home gives Nepal the best possible conditions to make their move. Whether they can take full advantage of playing in familiar surroundings will define their entire World Cup qualification journey.
