Mumbai Indians batter Rohit Sharma has set a new benchmark for Indian batters in the Indian Premier League (IPL). During a match against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday, April 4, he became the Indian player with the most sixes against a single team in the history of the tournament. He surpassed the long-standing record previously held by former Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni.
The “Hitman” broke the record during the eighth match of the ongoing IPL 2026 season. He entered the game needing only one six to move past Dhoni’s tally. He achieved the feat in the seventh over of the first innings.
Rohit Sharma Surpasses MS Dhoni in Elite List
Rohit Sharma arrived at the stadium in New Delhi with 50 sixes already to his name against the Delhi franchise. During his innings, he faced bowler Vipraj Nigam in the seventh over. On the sixth ball of that over, the opening batsman smashed a towering six to reach a total of 51 sixes against Delhi Capitals.
Before this match, MS Dhoni held the record for an Indian batter with 50 sixes against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Rohit’s single maximum was enough to take the top spot among Indian cricketers. Therefore, he now leads an elite group of Indian batters who have dominated specific bowling attacks over many years.

Left-arm spinner Axar Patel eventually took his wicket in the tenth over. Nitish Rana completed a sharp catch to end the veteran’s stay at the crease. Meanwhile, Sharma also came remarkably close to another massive milestone. He was just 11 runs away from becoming the first player to ever score a massive total of 6,000 runs for Mumbai Indians in the IPL.
Chris Gayle Holds the Global Record
While the Indian cricketer is now the number one Indian on this list, the legendary West Indies batter, Chris Gayle, holds the top two spots for most sixes against a single team. Gayle famously smashed 61 sixes against Punjab Kings during his career.
Meanwhile, Gayle hit 54 sixes against three times IPL champions, Kolkata Knight Riders. The Hitman currently sits in third place on the global list with his 51 sixes against Delhi. No other batter in the tournament has more than 50 sixes against a single team besides Gayle, Rohit, and Dhoni.

Will Dhoni Break the Record Again
MS Dhoni’s chance to reclaim the lead is currently uncertain. Reports indicate that Dhoni is recovering from a calf strain. He is expected to miss several weeks of action for Chennai Super Kings.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma continues to play as a regular opener for Mumbai Indians. This gives him a consistent opportunity to increase his tally in the upcoming matches.
Match Summary: Delhi Capitals vs Mumbai Indians
