During the World Para Athletics Championships 2025 held in New Delhi, Indian para-athlete Shailesh Kumar has clinched the first gold medal in the men’s high jump T63 class with a new Asian and Championship record of 1.91m. Similarly, he was also the silver medal holder at the 2023 World Para Athletics Champions in Paris with a record of 1.83m and gold at the Asian Para Games 2023 with a record of 1.82m.
Along with him, the other fellow Indian Varun Singh Bhati won the bronze medal, while Deepthi Jeevanji won the silver medal in the women’s 400m T20 race.Â
Shailesh Kumar at World Para Athletics Championships
Indian athletes have once again shown their potential at the global stage, and that too with a staggering record. In the recently held World Para Athletics Championships 2025 in New Delhi, Shailesh Kumar won the men’s high jump T63 class gold medal, registering a new Championship and Asian record of 1.91m. It was a proud moment for the whole nation since the 25-year-old athlete from Islamnagar village secured the first-ever gold medal of the event.Â
However, Shailesh Kumar’s dedication and hard work throughout the years should not be denied as well, since he had previously won silver at the 2023 World Championship and gold at the 2023 Asian Para Games, but did not manage to clinch the medal at the recently concluded Paris 2024 Paralympics as he ended a campaign with a fourth-place finish. His focus and determination on coming back were evident since he has been training hard in Bengaluru ahead of the 2025 event. In New Delhi, he had cleared 1.85m, 1.88m, and 1.91m to win the title. Similarly, on Saturday, he competed in the T42 class, attempted a 1.94m jump, but failed to clear the bar.
In addition to this, several other Indian athletes managed to grab the medals at their respective events. The high jump T63 event combined the T42 and T63 events, which included competitors with lower-body impairment. The current Paralympics champion of the USA, Ezra Frech, won the silver with 1.85m, and an experienced Indian jumper, Varun Singh Bhati, won the bronze with the same height on countback. Rahul, another Indian, was fourth with a personal best of 1.78m.

Similarly, in the women’s category, Deepthi Jeevanji added silver in the women’s 400m T20 event with a season-best 55.16 seconds, finishing just behind Turkey’s Aysel Onder, who set a world record of 54.51 seconds, respectively. It was a good day at the office for Indian athletes since they were able to bag one gold, one silver, and one bronze, with the championship still to be run until October 5.Â

From the writer’s point of view, Shailesh Kumar’s gold medal at the ongoing World Para Athletics Championships is the true testament of his hard work and dedication towards the sports he has been involved with for several years. Giving India the first-ever gold medal at the event was one of the milestones for him and the country as a whole. Along with him, Varun Singh Bhati and Deepthi Jeevanji also bagged bronze and silver medals, respectively, further increasing the medal count.Â
With the event to be run until October 5, it would be interesting to see how other Indian athletes will perform at their respective events.Â
