A woman from the state of Victoria is preparing to sue an Australian sportsbook after her accountant admitted to gambling away AU$820,000 (US$542,106) of her life savings
According to The Age, 53-year-old Kym Cavigan is suing Flutter subsidiary Sportsbet over a duty of care, claiming the sportsbook shouldn’t have credited the suspect Andrew Marshall’s betting account with her illegally redirected savings.
“It’s not their money, and they should have known that the money they are profiting from was stolen from us,” Cavigan, who wants compensation, stated.
Marshall allegedly shifted Cavigan’s savings between two bank accounts before crediting his Sportsbet account. The state has charged Marshall with stealing funds amounting to nearly AU$4.2m ($2.7m).

Cavigan discovered Marshall’s deception in 2023 when he visited her and tearfully confessed face-to-face of “dipping into client accounts – including hers – to pay for his Sportsbet wagers.”
According to reports, the contrite accountant confessed to the police before breaking the news to the mother of two. Marshall has pleaded guilty and is due back in court in November.
The accountant is even helping his ex-victim, furnishing Cavigan with bank statements, texts, and documentation to help in her potential lawsuit against Sportsbet.
